Goldilocks and the Three Bears

English folk tale

A curious girl wanders into the home of three bears while they are out for a walk.

Illustration from “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”: She tasted the porridge in the great big bowl, but it was much too hot.

Once upon a time, three bears lived in a little house at the edge of the woods. There was a great big Papa Bear, a middle-sized Mama Bear, and a wee little Baby Bear. One morning, Mama Bear made a pot of porridge for breakfast. The porridge was too hot to eat, so the three bears went for a walk while it cooled.

Not far away lived a little girl with golden curls, and everyone called her Goldilocks. She was walking in the woods that morning, and she came upon the bears’ house. She knocked on the door, but nobody answered. So Goldilocks pushed the door open and stepped inside, which was not a polite thing to do.

On the table were three bowls of porridge. She tasted the porridge in the great big bowl, but it was much too hot. She tasted the porridge in the middle-sized bowl, but it was much too cold. Then she tasted the porridge in the wee little bowl, and it was just right, so she ate it all up.

Next, Goldilocks saw three chairs by the fire. The great big chair was too hard, and the middle-sized chair was too soft. The wee little chair was just right, but she wiggled so much that it broke into pieces. Feeling sleepy, she went upstairs and found three beds. The great big bed was too high, and the middle-sized bed was too low. The wee little bed was just right, so she snuggled under the blanket and fell fast asleep.

Soon the three bears came home, hungry from their walk. “Somebody has been eating my porridge,” said Papa Bear in his great big voice. “Somebody has been eating my porridge,” said Mama Bear in her middle-sized voice. “Somebody has been eating my porridge, and they ate it all up!” cried Baby Bear in his wee little voice. Then the three bears looked at their chairs. “Somebody has been sitting in my chair, and they broke it!” sobbed Baby Bear.

The three bears tiptoed upstairs to the bedroom. “Somebody has been sleeping in my bed,” said Papa Bear. “Somebody has been sleeping in my bed,” said Mama Bear. “Somebody is sleeping in my bed right now!” squeaked Baby Bear.

Goldilocks opened her eyes and saw three bears looking down at her. She jumped out of bed, ran down the stairs, and dashed all the way home. “I’m sorry!” she called back over her shoulder. From that day on, Goldilocks never went into anyone’s house without being asked.
