Teeny-Tiny

English folk tale

A teeny-tiny woman hears a teeny-tiny voice in the night, and the answer makes her laugh.

Illustration from “Teeny-Tiny”: She gave the teeny-tiny puppy his teeny-tiny bone, and he licked her teeny-tiny nose.

Once upon a time, there was a teeny-tiny woman who lived in a teeny-tiny house in a teeny-tiny village. One day, the teeny-tiny woman put on her teeny-tiny bonnet and went out for a teeny-tiny walk. She walked a teeny-tiny way until she came to a teeny-tiny gate. Next to the teeny-tiny gate, lying in the grass, she found a teeny-tiny bone. “This teeny-tiny bone will make some teeny-tiny soup for my teeny-tiny supper,” she said. So she put the teeny-tiny bone in her teeny-tiny pocket and walked a teeny-tiny way home. She did not see the teeny-tiny pair of eyes that watched her go.

When she got home, the teeny-tiny woman felt a teeny-tiny bit tired. She put the teeny-tiny bone in her teeny-tiny cupboard. Then she climbed the teeny-tiny stairs and got into her teeny-tiny bed.

She had been asleep for a teeny-tiny time when she heard a teeny-tiny voice. It came from the teeny-tiny cupboard downstairs, and it said, “Give me my bone!” The teeny-tiny woman was a teeny-tiny bit frightened, so she hid her teeny-tiny head under the teeny-tiny blanket.

Then the teeny-tiny voice said again, a teeny-tiny bit louder, “Give me my bone!” The teeny-tiny woman hid her teeny-tiny head a teeny-tiny bit deeper. Then the teeny-tiny voice said, a teeny-tiny bit louder still, “Give me my bone!”

The teeny-tiny woman peeked out from under her teeny-tiny blanket. She took a deep breath, and in her very loudest teeny-tiny voice, she said, “Take it!” From the teeny-tiny cupboard came a teeny-tiny “Woof!” The teeny-tiny woman hopped out of bed, tiptoed down the stairs, and opened the cupboard door. And who do you think was sitting inside? It was a teeny-tiny puppy, wagging his teeny-tiny tail!

The teeny-tiny puppy had followed her all the way home and crept into the cupboard to find his bone. The teeny-tiny woman laughed a great big laugh. She gave the teeny-tiny puppy his teeny-tiny bone, and he licked her teeny-tiny nose. And from that night on, the teeny-tiny puppy slept at the foot of her teeny-tiny bed.
