The parts of Dino Kids meant for grown-ups, such as Settings, deleting pictures or recording your voice, all sit behind a small gate: a multiplication question that a parent can answer in a few seconds but a 3–5-year-old can't yet. In a family where an older brother or sister already knows their times tables, though, an easy question doesn't stop anyone. So parents can choose how hard the question is.

What the gate looks like

The For grown-ups screen shows a multiplication, such as 14 × 2 = ?, with six answers to tap. Tap the right answer to go in. If you change your mind, tap Cancel.

  • Wrong answer: the app says Not quite — here is a new question. and switches to a different sum.
  • Three wrong answers in a row: the gate locks for a while, 60 seconds the first time and 5 minutes after that, with a countdown.
  • No tap for 30 seconds: the gate closes by itself.

Choosing a level

Go to Settings, find the Parental gate question section and tap one of the three buttons. Below the buttons is an example for the level that is selected. Changing the level doesn't ask you to pass the gate again, because you are already in Settings.

  • Easy: multiply by 2–3, such as 14 × 2. This is the level the app starts with.
  • Medium: multiply by 3–5, such as 17 × 4.
  • Hard: multiply by 6–9, such as 23 × 7. A good fit for families with older children who know their times tables.

None of the levels can be solved by a 3–5-year-old yet. The level is set for the whole device, not per child.

Where you meet the gate

  • The Settings and Help buttons at the top of the home screen, and the Help button on the welcome screen.
  • Add a child on the profile screen, Add a picture in Art, Add a song on the Songs shelf.
  • Deleting a picture in My art room.
  • Recording your voice: the Add a recording button in lessons, the Microphone button on the story reader, and the record button on the Listen to the tables screen.
  • The reminder to update the app.

The parts that belong to your child, such as the subjects, Playtime or switching child on the Who's playing? screen, don't go through the gate.

Good to know

  • Opening the How-to guides from inside Settings doesn't ask the gate question again.
  • The gate is only there so that little ones don't wander in by accident; it isn't a password. Your account details are still protected by signing in.
